Clinical Genomics & Epidemiology 

Infectious Diseases (One-Health)

To systematically monitor antimicrobial resistance mechanisms worldwide, aiming to improve our comprehension of resistance dynamics and guide the development of focused intervention approaches via the One Health Approach (Clinical, Environmental and Food)

Epidemiology & Public Health 

The aim is to employ environmental metagenomics across diverse sample types for public health purposes, to comprehensively assess microbial communities to monitor environmental health and potential risks to human populations via One Health Approach.

Human Microbiome

To leverage metagenomics techniques to provide insights into the underlying mechanisms linking the microbiome and diabetes, ultimately aiming to develop targeted interventions for improved management and prevention of the disease.

Genomics of Foodborne Diseases

To employ genomics approaches for the study of foodborne diseases by gaining insight into genetic factors underlying pathogen virulence, transmission dynamics, and antimicrobial resistance and then inform evidence-based interventions and public health policies aimed at reducing the burden of foodborne illnesses and ensuring the safety of the food supply chain.

Genomics of Plant-Pathogen

To utilize genomics to study plant-pathogen interactions, with a focus on elucidating the genetic mechanisms governing pathogen virulence, host susceptibility, and disease resistance. By analyzing the genomic sequences of both plants and pathogens, this research seeks to uncover key genetic determinants driving disease development and spread in agricultural systems.

Therapeutics R&D (Multi-Omics)/Drug Design & Discovery 

Anti-Bacteria R&D

To pioneer a novel approach by integrating multi-omics data and cutting-edge machine learning techniques to systematically discover, optimize, and develop novel therapeutic antibacterial peptides sourced from diverse natural origins.

Anti-Malaria R&D

To systematically investigate and optimize peptides derived from microbial and plant sources for the development of targeted and effective anti-malarial drugs, addressing the urgent need for novel strategies against malaria and drug-resistant strains.

Anti-Cancer R&D

To discover and leverage biosynthetic genes from medicinal sources, integrating them into the development of peptide-based anti-cancer therapeutics using a multi-omics and machine learning approach, with the goal of enhancing precision and efficacy in cancer treatment.

Bursary Support Eligibility Criteria:
  • Applicants must be passionate about research or study in the fields of genomics or bioinformatics.

  • Demonstrated financial need or limited access to resources to cover the full program fee.

  • Open to participants from all geographic locations and backgrounds.

  • Priority may be given to applicants from underrepresented groups in the field or those from developing regions, although all eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.​
